What will your dash say about you???

There’ll be two dates on your tombstone and all your friends will read ’em but all that’s gonna matter is that little dash between ’em.
~ Kevin Welch

This past weekend I attended my great aunts funeral. She was ninety three years old. She was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and longtime babysitter. She was the matriarch of my little hometown and the oldest living resident. To me she was an angel, the best babysitter and the best sugar cookie maker in the south. She was a devoted wife, mother, and she was devoted to Christ. A servant to Jesus and a servant to many around her.

As I sat there and listened to her sons and grandson tell of her life. They described her as the Proverbs 31 woman. She served the Lord and her household and never thought of herself. If you have never read Proverbs 31 it is a must read.

I sat listening and looking at the dash between her birth date and the day she passed and all I could think about was the DASH!! That dash represented her life. Her life of serving the Lord, loving God and her family. Her dash was being told by her sons and grandson as if it was word for word Proverbs 31.

Tears filled my eyes as I thought about what my dash would represent. Would it be a dash like my aunts? For my aunt was not a queen or a millionaire, but a servant of the Lord. Her dash was so meaningful.

Some people in this world will build their lives based on money, education, marriages and simply sinful pleasures, THAT will be their dash. I DONT WANT THAT FOR MINE!!

I want to be like my aunt. I want my dash to represent love for Jesus, service for his people and service for my family. I pray that when my time comes my DASH will be pictured as the Proverbs 31 woman.

So how will your dash represent you???

Proverbs 31: 10-31

  1. Loved your blog post today and I’ve always loved Proverbs 31. In fact it was the basis of my Sunday School lesson the other week with my high schoolers. May we all have a meaningful “dash”.

  2. Thank you so much for reading!! I love that verse too. If only I would have known it as a teenager!!
